Sacraments & Liturgy
The Sacrament of Baptism
Our Lord said to His Apostles, “All power is given to Me in Heaven and in earth. Going, therefore, teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.” Baptism is a Sacrament which cleanses us from original sin, makes us Christians, children of God, and heirs of Heaven. We are the heirs of Christ because at His death we came into the possession of God’s friendship, of grace, and of the right to enter Heaven, provided we comply with the conditions Our Lord had laid down for the gaining of this inheritance. The conditions Our Lord has laid down are that we receive the Sacraments He has instituted and that we believe and practice all He has taught.
In the selection of godparents for their children, parents should consider the good character and virtue of the godparents, selecting model Catholics to whom they would be willing at the hour of death to entrust the care and training of their children.
Godparents are given at Baptism in order that they may promise, in the name of the child, what the child itself would promise if it had the use of reason. Godparents, as well as the baptizing, contract a spiritual relationship with the person baptized (not with the parents). The obligation of godparents is to instruct the child in its religious duties if the parents neglect to do so or die.
